Surprising Fulfillment

Last week I wrapped up a group I have been working with for the past 10 weeks or so which was a 7v7 organization that I was running the speed training for.

As most of you know, I have coached 7v7 in the past and love working with these groups. I was not on the skill side of things, but working on their speed was even more rewarding.

I love all my different groups for different reasons, but when I tell you working with this group has been the most fulfilling group of my career to date, I mean it. There were weeks where we got rained out and couldn’t train that night, so I called a couple of the kids at 10pm on that night and told them to pull up to the field the next morning at 5 am and guess what? All of them came.

It was dark, it was cold, it was early… and it was one of my favorite sessions I've ever had. We all loved (hated) it so much that we have run it back every week since then. And it's now everyone's favorite day of the week.

Some of these kids no longer play 7v7 as they are committed to play college ball and leave in a few weeks so I will continue to train them, but to have high school kids waking up at 4 am to get to a session that isn’t necessarily required, it makes it much easier to show up for them.

The 5am Club

Now, waking up at 5 am isn’t exactly new to me. I’ve always been a morning person basically because I had to be. I’ve always worked early, worked out early, opted for the early start classes- and I’ve said it before but I feel like waking up early is the cheat code to productivity.

A lot of my reasoning behind this comes from a book called The 5 AM Club: Own Your Morning. Elevate Your Life.

The book tells a story of a handful of men: an artist, an entrepreneur, and a “homeless man.” Throughout the story, the homeless man turns out not to be homeless but a billionaire instead, and teaches the other men a multitude of valuable lessons.

He explains that getting up at 5 AM has a multiplying effect on our habits and productivity. He explains the first hour of the day should be broken up into three parts, each consisting of about 20 minutes: Exercise, reflection, and learning.

So for me, this doesn’t always check out as I will usually work out first for an hour, then continue with learning/reading/meditating/work. But he also recommends the 60/1 method of spending 60 minute frames of intense work, followed by 10 minutes of rest.

The book is a mix of storytelling and “how to’s” so I took from it what I could apply directly into my routine. I am already an early riser, but this book gives great insight into having some extra time at the start of the day to stack habits and create a solid routine.

Female Spotlight

Some of you may know my dear friend and fellow More Her Speed member, Autumn Lockwood. Autumn has been completely dominating the Women in Sports industry for a while now, with her recent addition to the performance team at the Philadelphia Eagles.

But her family has recently experienced a major tragedy, with her brother unexpectedly undergoing a series of seizures that has put him under sedation and fighting hard.

Autumn and her family are amazing individuals and I want to quickly share the GoFundMe page they have created for her brother Jeff as they navigate through this tough time.

To the Lockwoods: WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOU!
