Coach Saban on REACTIONS in life
Whatās up yāall? Cici here.
Welcome back to More Her Speed, a weekly no-BS newsletter all about women in coaching.
The Dumbest Folks are always the Loudest
This past weekend I got the opportunity to travel to Arizona with some of my coworkers.
On Saturday, we watched the University of Arizona football team (one of the college teams we work with) take on Mississippi State.
Then on Sunday, we got to watch some of our guys in the NFL during the Cardinals game.
While I was having a nice weekend enjoying some football, somebody commented something on one of my recent instagram posts about being a woman in coaching.
He thinks that women doing things that men have traditionally done isnāt progressā¦
He thinks that the way it was is the way it should be.
Now Iām not gonna tag him or reference the post here because to be honestā¦ I was pretty unbothered.
I truly donāt listen to opinions like that. I know what WE are trying to build and accomplish as the More Her Speed community, and the overwhelming support weāve received from all of YOU is incredible.
If you want to join our Membership community to have access to slack channels, webinars, conferences + moreā¦ tap in.
Be Careful what you Post
I saw something very motivational this week on social. It comes from none other than the great Nick Saban.
We are coaches or trainersā¦ but we are also role models in some cases.
I canāt tell you how many times Iāve had to tell my younger athletes āBe smart, one wrong decision could cost you a scholarship.ā
And itās true, and tenfold once you get to the college and even professional levels.
When schools are looking for an athlete, theyāre going to look at their Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok.
Nobodyās perfect, but if a team is going to pay you to represent their organization - they expect you to be close to it.
Look at Laremy Tunsil, whoās draft stock fell DRAMATICALLY after a problematic video hit the internet the night of the draft.
Thatās tens of millions of dollars he lostā¦ for ONE failed move.
Saban says you canāt control what happens to you.. but you can control your reactions & be smart about what you put on camera and who you keep around you.
Holding your athletes to a high standard is one of the most important services we can provide.
If at First you Donāt Succeedā¦
If youāre a member of our community, and have been on the last few webinars, this name should sound familiar..
But for anyone who hasnāt been introducedā¦ please meet MEAGAN VOTA.
Her journey is relatable for most strength coaches, because her RESILIENCE is admirable!
Meagan graduated with her masters in Exercise Phys from University of Louisville in 2022.
She got into Strength and Conditioning during her junior year and applied to over 30 positions anticipating a career after graduation.
One of her first submissions was to IMG amongst a number of other high level programs, but it just wasnāt the right time.
After doing some networking and revisiting the application process, she landed the job at IMG this past summer and works primarily with baseball, girls lacrosse, and developmental tennis teams.
Though she has loved working with the female athletes, she has her sights set on an admin position where she can be a voice and an advocate for athletes.
This story was really cool for me to learn and I wanted to share it with all of you because most of us realize we canāt actually coach forever, so how can we use our voice and our experience to guide those who we have already helped?
If you havenāt already, go follow Meagan.
Quote of the Week
āThe one thing you learn is when you can step out of your comfort zone and be uncomfortable, you see what you're made of and who you are.ā
-Sue Bird
Take some chances this week.
Appreciate yāall,
