Practice what you preach

What’s up y’all? Cici here.

Welcome back to More Her Speed, a weekly no-BS newsletter all about women in coaching.

Before I get into it, I just want to show y’all something.

I know most of you know about our membership community here at More Her Speed, and how every month we have a webinar EXCLUSIVE for members from a DOPE female coach.

In September, we had Autumn Lockwood from the Philadelphia Eagles. She crushed it and provided so many amazing insights. Here is just a short clip from the webinar on her coaching philosophy.

Next week we have our October webinar with another badass woman (my team won’t let me tell y’all who yet lol).

If that sounds like something you’d be interested in… come join us over on this side: https://moreherspeed.podia.com/

Practice what you preach

We recently started a training group called Speed City Academy down in San Diego.

Originally, we sought out for this group to be about 15 girls and 15 boys.

But, unfortunately with the craziness of a fall family schedule (everyone going back to school and practices) we ended up with about 7 high school kids in total.

But the goal and the work remained the same. We can change on the fly to turn a 30-kid group into a small exclusive group that we run two days a week… no problem.

I think that's the beauty of our team.

Whether it's 1 kid or 30 kids, we are still showing up and giving that one kid everything we’ve got.

We aren’t going to cancel a session or an event because we didn’t hit the numbers we wanted to hit.

We are going to deliver the max amount of value to the ones that showed up.

Good PEOPLE Matter

We come across this issue a lot in the sports performance space, especially when looking to expand our team.

As some of you may know, we only have 4 coaches on our team.

Not because we don’t want others or can’t find smart people, but because building a team is less about hiring the smartest people in the room… and more about hiring the RIGHT people.

You can teach an intern all there is to know about speed and how we operate our sessions.

But you can't teach someone how to be a good person. Character and heart is something that you either have or you don’t, and it isn't something that can be taught.

Being well qualified for the job isn’t just about where you went to school or even how many athletes you’ve worked with. It is about who you are as a person, and the intentions you have with the athletes and other people on the team.

You’ve gotta be built for it.

Lo Locust… Pioneer

The female coach spotlight for this week is Buccaneers Assistant Coach, Lo Locust.

She SHATTERED barriers to become the first female position coach in the NFL and third female full-time assistant coach in NFL history.

Now the assistant defensive line coach for the Bucs, she got her start in football not with a clipboard… but with pads.

Locust played 5 seasons at defensive line for the Central PA Vipers, being named team captain and MVP.

She got her start in the coaching world by sticking around the Vipers organization as a coach following her retirement.

From 2009 until 2019 (when she was hired by the Bucs), Locust built her resume and reputation by coaching for

-Susquehanna Township High School

-Central Penn Pirhana

-Central Penn Capitals

-Lehigh Valley Steelhawks

-interning for the Baltimore Ravens

To land her Bucs gig, Locust sent Bruce Arians an email with an eye-catching subject line: “Thirty-six years later, I’d love to work for you’

When Arians coached at Temple in 1983, Locust was a student there. The timing was perfect, and Arians responded with an offer.

Locust went on to win a Super Bowl with the Bucs in 2021, and continues to advance the cause of women in coaching.

I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with Coach Lo and sharing support as she is someone who we can all look up to, male or female.

Not only has she blazed the path for women in this lane, but any man can respect what she’s doing at the level she’s at and she deserves all the flowers.

Quote of the Week

The quote of the week is from Nelson Mandela:

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.
