🏃‍♀️ The GAP in the industry + expertise vs. experience

Data-driven approach vs. trying new things out…

What’s up y’all? Cici here.

Welcome back to More Her Speed, a weekly no-BS newsletter all about women in coaching.

The Gap in the Industry

It’s been a crazy week for us over here at Spellman Performance.

This past offseason, we added heavy deceleration and change of direction programming into our NFL workouts.

I’ve touched on it before in this newsletter, but we truly believe that it’s the missing link for a lot of training.

A lot of y'all ask… “what can I do to set my training apart from others?”

Linear speed is very important, but I think deceleration and change of direction (COD) is the missing piece in a lot of programs

My coworker turned brother, Jevaughn Pinnock, launched his first course, The Deceleration Blueprint, last week.

It’s a deep dive into the theory behind deceleration training coupled with practical implementation of drills that you can start teaching your athletes TODAY.

I definitely recommend tapping in. Grab that early bird pricing while you still can!

Expertise vs. Experience

I read an interesting piece from Stuart McMillan yesterday that got me thinking back on my journey as a coach.

Stu, for anyone unfamiliar, is the CEO of ALTIS and an amazing speed development coach.

We have had the pleasure of knowing Stu, and we enjoy bouncing ideas off of him.

He has worked in every level of coaching, from amateur athletes all the way up to Olympians.

Since he has an incredibly impressive resume, I always love hearing things from his perspective.

In this edition of his newsletter, he asked a great question: How much of your programming is guided by your expertise, and how much is guided by your experience?

He explains that he felt the need to back everything he did in training with a scientific explanation and if he couldn't, then he wouldn't include it in his programming.

Though we are firm believers of data-driven and data-backed training, we are also practitioners of trying things out and seeing what works and what doesn't.

That is the beauty of working with such a diverse group of athletes, you can test things out on certain groups and then carry it over into others if you get the desired outcome.

Our goal is to help our athletes, and safely expose them to stimulus that is going to make them better.

Quote of the Week
